A report released by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice claims children’s school supplies sold at Kmart and other retail outlets may contain high levels of toxic chemicals linked to asthma and birth defects. Seventy-five percent of children’s school supplies tested by Paradigm Environmental Services were found to have high levels of toxic phthalates; 15 percent were made in China and 5 percent did not have a country of origin label.
