A report published by investment firm Piper Jaffray reveals that 70 percent of teenagers prefer to shop at their favorite stores online. Top shopping websites are Amazon, eBay and Nike. In general, teens are shopping via the Internet and brick-and-mortar outlets more frequently, and less so at specialty stores.

Cell phone access to the Internet (48 percent own an iPhone), as well as social media interaction with brands, retailers and friends on Facebook are making an impact. Girls, in particular, report that friends’ opinions and ‘likes’ sway their purchases. Instagram and Twitter use is up too, although the survey did not show any evidence of their impact on sales.

The study also found that parents are contributing less to teen purchases, which may account for teens shopping at less expensive online retailers and chain and big box stores. Parents’ financial assistance dropped nearly 10 percent from the previous survey.
