When Samantha Lischka gave birth to her son in May of 2013, she searched high and low for monochrome muslin swaddle blankets. “Research shows, time and time again, that babies 0 to 4 months prefer to look at black-and-white, high-contrast patterns over bright colors or pastels,” she says, noting, “It enhances brain development and sharpens eyesight.” So she took it upon herself to make her own, and Modern Burlap was born. While there are many black-and-white cotton blankets on the market, Lischka admits, muslin is more beneficial for babies. “It’s light and breathable, and it reduces the risk of SIDS,” she points out. Today, the line has expanded beyond blankets (SRP $25 to $35) to include graphic tees and one-pieces with cheeky slogans in sizes 3-6 months to 10 years. Earnshaw’s asked the Texas-based designer about her inspirations and personal style.

Any standout clothing memories from your childhood? High-waisted blue jean shorts and high socks – both of which are back in style! Nothing beats a good pair of blue jeans or a black leather jacket – timeless and sophisticated and easy to dress up or down.

Who is your style icon? It changes continuously, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the Olsen twins’ laid-back style. Although some of their outfits are a a bit over the top for me, I love the simple outfits they throw together so seamlessly.

Which trends do you hope to never see again? Crop tops need to go.

Which designer do you admire the most? In the children’s industry, I highly admire Bobo Choses and Mini & Maximus. Both designers are blowing me away each season as they launch their new products. When it comes to women’s clothing, I really like Acne and other designers with minimalist staple pieces.

What is your favorite part of your job? I love what I do, and I love that I can be a stay-at-home mom while I’m doing it. Someone said it best when they said: Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. It’s the truth!

If you weren’t designing clothes, what would you be doing? Following my heart and designing something else. Modern Burlap has taught me the importance of trusting your imagination and following your heart. If you don’t create the things you wish existed, someone else will.

Any New Year’s Resolutions? I prefer setting continuous goals throughout the year and achieving them at my own pace. It’s okay if I make mistakes. As long as I’m trying to better myself and my lifestyle continuously, I’m okay with that.

What are three things you cannot not live without? Family, sunshine and the great outdoors.
