Pink Panther Inspires New Pantone Shade

*cues theme song*

Perhaps the only thing more iconic than the Pink Panther’s jazzy theme song is his unmistakable pink hue.
That’s why production company Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) and Pantone, the global authority on color, teamed for a vibrant and playful shade of pink inspired by the legendary series: Pink Panther Pink. According to a recent brand study, Pink Panther’s coloring is his most recognizable attribute, so when creating the new color, it was important for MGM and Pantone to stay true to Pink Panther’s roots, while also developing a tone that refreshed the character for the 21st century.
The pink shade, with undertones of blue and yellow, not only embodies the charismatic and charming aspects of Pink Panther’s personality, it also enhances the character’s famously smooth style that has helped to establish his place in the larger cultural zeitgeist, including recent collaborations with top fashion and retail brands like H&M, Zara, Mimi Wade, South Korean Apparel brand Stereo Vinyls and U.K. beauty brand Peaches & Cream.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute, is tickled pink by the collab’s results. “As an iconic character beloved by all, it was important that we develop a pink shade truly emblematic of Pink Panther’s spirited nature, one that celebrates the legacy of this ingenious comic hero as well as the future,” she explains. “The new Pink Panther pink captures Pink Panther’s irreverent charm and suave sophistication, conveying the signature ultra-cool style of this lovable prankster.”
The Pantone collaboration comes on the heels of recent accolades for the Pink Panther property, including the Bologna Licensing Award 2019 for Best Kids Licensed Fashion Project for a collaboration with the clothing brand Monnalisa, as well as an HBA 2020 Licensing International Excellence Award for a collaboration with beauty brand Peaches & Cream.
MGM’s iconic character, Pink Panther, started life in the front and end credits of the legendary detective series of the same name more than 50 years ago. Its popularity spawned TV series, specials, comics, merchandise and has even become associated with the color pink worldwide. Pink Panther continues to be discovered by new generations and remains one of MGM’s most well-known franchises.
“Pink Panther is an iconic character and classic brand that has been admired by audiences of all ages for decades, for both his suave elegance and whimsical charisma,” says Robert Marick, MGM’s executive vice president of global consumer products and experiences. “Pantone really understood our desire to stay authentic to the character with this new partnership, and together we’ve created a captivating and vibrant shade of pink that will not only appeal to existing fans of the brand, but also help introduce the character to an entirely new generation of passionate and engaged consumers.”
