A recent National Retail Federation survey found that 36 percent of all holiday shopping tasks will take place online this year, up from 32.7 percent last year. Online shoppers are expected to compare prices, research and buy products from e-tailers and will likely spend 21.7 percent more than an average brick-and-mortar customer. In fact, online shoppers will do just more than half of their holiday shopping on the web.
The convenience of smartphones and tablets may be aiding the increase. Forty percent of the consumers surveyed own smartphones and more than half say they will use them to aid in their shopping. Nearly 11 percent of the group owns tablet computers. Of those, more than 70 percent will use their devices to research products; 34.8 percent will use them to make purchases.
