According to a National Retail Federation study, consumers expect to spend more on Mother’s Day gifts this year than last year, with total spending expected to reach $14.6 billion. While the report noted that top mom gifts include dinners out and flowers, the NRF projected that shoppers will spend approximately $2.5 billion on jewelry, $1.3 billion on clothing and accessories, and $671 million on greeting cards.

Behind the winter holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza), Mother’s Day is the second largest U.S. consumer spending holiday. “Even with slight improvements in the economy, consumers are still looking for unique, sentimental and inexpensive ways to show mom that she is important,” said Tracy Mullin, NRF president and CEO.
