Illinois lawmakers have approved a plan to levy taxes on Internet sales made by online retailers through local affiliates. The 6.25 percent use tax still needs approval from Democrat Governor Pat Quinn. Illinois is not the first state to propose such a tax—Texas, North Carolina and New York have all adopted versions, which have been met with objection by e-retailers such as Amazon.com and Overstock.com. The tax is a part of Illinois House Bill 3659.
