First Candle, a nonprofit dedicated to the survival of babies during the first years of life, will host its 2009 annual fundraising gala on Thursday, Oct. 22; the festivities will start at 7 p.m. at the Tribeca Rooftop in New York.

This year’s chair is Emma Byrne Rooney, daughter-in-law of Dan Rooney (owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ambassador to Ireland) who lost her daughter in 2004. “There is nothing I am more passionate about than helping ensure that every baby is given the best possible chance to reach not only his or her first birthday but many happy birthdays beyond,” she noted.

Besides dinner and dancing, the gala will feature a silent auction; proceeds will support research, education and family support services nationwide. Auction items include vacation packages to Belize, Hawaii and Telluride, Colo.; an NFL Pro Bowl package; and an autographed Derek Jeter jersey. For more information, visit www.firstcandle.org.
