Who could forget the iconic image of a young John F. Kennedy, Jr. at the White House, clinging to his mother and playing with her necklace? Babies will grab onto (and mouth) anything they can reach, and colorful jewelry is no exception. Fashion industry veteran Lisa Greenwald, whose own son did the same, was concerned about how safe this was—she worried, what if the necklace broke or it contained dangerous chemicals? Instead of giving up the accessory, she created Chewbeads—a colorful, soft and non-toxic jewelry line based on her own collection of necklaces and bracelets.

Made of 100 percent silicone (similar to pacifiers) without BPA, PVC, phthalates, cadmium or lead, the necklaces include breakaway clasps for extra safety and help babies focus while nursing. New for Fall ’11 is the Hudson necklace, comprised of flat hammered disks. Wholesale prices range from $5 to $18.
