Mattel Inc.’s Barbie doll marked her birthday on March 9, 50 years after the character’s debut at the New York Toy Fair. The company marked the milestone by releasing an updated version of the original 1959 doll, which sold for just $3—its original price—during Barbie’s birthday week. Other Barbie dolls have also received a makeover, giving her a more natural look.
In addition, Mattel partnered with interior decorator Jonathan Adler to create a life-size Malibu Dream House in Malibu, Calif., which housed a celeb-studded Barbie birthday party. The anniversary celebration will continue with events around the world. Visit www.mattel.com.
