Macy’s to Pay $750,000 Civil Penalty for Selling Children’s Outerwear with Drawstrings

Department store chain Macy’s Inc. will pay a civil penalty of $750,000 to resolve allegations that it knowingly failed to report to the Children Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that the company sold children’s outerwear with drawstrings after the CPSC issued a recall on those products. The CPSC alleges that Macy’s sold children’s sweatshirts, sweaters and jackets with drawstrings—a strangulation hazard, according to the CPSC—between 2006 and 2010, after a 2008 law made selling items after an issued recall illegal. In the settlements, the company denied allegations that it knowingly violated the law.
