Kids in Distressed Situations celebrated 25 years of helping children in need last week with a gala event held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York. Gayle King, editor at large of O, the Oprah Magazine, hosted the evening. Newark Mayor Cory Booker delivered a lively keynote speech in which he reminded attendees that no one makes it on his/her own and that our greatest natural resource as a country is our children.
Honorees included: John Goodman, executive vice president of Sears Holding Corporation; Oscar Feldenkreis, president and chief operating officer of Perry Ellis Corporation; and Wayne Elsey, founder and chief executive officer of footwear charity Soles4Souls. Karen Bromley was also recognized for her 25 years of uninterrupted service to the organization. During her speech, she shared that her own experience in the foster care system has been her motivation.
