DHX Media, a Canada-based youth production company, has acquired Los Angeles-based Wildbrain Entertainment, the studio behind Yo Gabba Gabba!, for a reported $8 million. The purchase is the company’s latest step toward its goal of becoming a global producer of family entertainment.
Wildbrain’s in-house creative team will also stay on and remain in L.A., and its president, Michael Polis, will continue in his role and also serve as executive vice president of branded entertainment and consumer products for DHX Media. In that new role, he will oversee DHX Media’s international licensing activities.
“There’s an excellent capacity for merchandising and licensing areas, especially with Michael Polis on board,” said Steven DeNure, president and COO of DHX, noting that his company is examining numerous avenues for brand extensions. Wildbrain plans to leverage DHX’s global distribution infrastructure for future properties and secure new merchandising and licensing revenue opportunities in the U.S. and abroad.
